Overview:

The Social Research Unit (formerly SERIO) was commissioned to undertake the evaluation of the Ageing Well Torbay (AWT) programme, a collaborative effort between older people, voluntary and public sector agencies. Managed by Torbay Community Development Trust, AWT was funded by the National Lottery Community Fund as part of the Ageing Better programme. This local partnership was dedicated to combating isolation and loneliness among older residents in Torbay.

Objectives of the project:

  • Reduce isolation and loneliness among older people in Torbay

The Social Research Unit’s evaluation approach:

  • Provide a comprehensive evaluation which included the management and support of a team of community researchers.

  • Assess the delivery impacts and social return on investment of the AWT programme over six years

  • Conduct evaluation through a capacity-building model to leave a lasting legacy of skills and expertise within the community

Impact:

  • Informed programme enhancements and adjustments based on evidence-driven insights

  • Empowered the Torbay community to actively contribute to their wellbeing

  • Contributed to the broader mission of Ageing Better by addressing isolation and loneliness among older residents
